| Harry Houdini (1874-1926), famed escape artist and magician, left behind a cultural legacy that resonates today. On this CD, you’ll hear him on the only surviving recording of his voice, from a 1914 Edison cylinder. The famed final seance attempt to contact Houdini is here as well, conducted by Houdini’s widow Bess and Dr. Edward Saint in Hollywood in 1936. You’ll also enjoy a 1937 radio episode of Unsolved Mysteries based on Houdini’s life, plus a recording of Groucho Marx and his story of assisting Houdini. Finally, we’ve included audio books of some of Houdini’s most intriguing volumes (Miracle Mongers and Their Methods and The Right Way to Do Wrong, plus the scenario for his movie The Master Mystery) and two vintage articles in audio form, “Handcuff Releases” from Scientific American in 1912 and “The Story of Harry Houdini” from The New York Times in 1918. (Audio books courtesy of the public domain LibriVox series.) |
